Founded in 1897, Kappa Delta is a national sorority with nearly 200,000 members and over 140 active collegiate chapters. We make great things happen in women's lives every day, on both college campuses and in our communities nationwide. Kappa Delta inspires its members to reach their potential by offering opportunities for leadership, personal development, academic success, and community service; all in the context of true friendship.

The Sigma Kappa Chapter of Kappa Delta is located at The Ohio State University, where we have been named Chapter of the Year in five of the last nine years.Our home is located at 116 East 15th Avenue in Columbus, Ohio.

Social

Social Events
Kappa Delta participates in many social events each quarter. The following is a description of each type of social event that Kappa Deltas go to:TGs (Themed Gatherings)Several times each quarter, KDs pair up with a fraternity and enjoy an evening together. Some favorite themes are School Girls, Hawaiian, Dress to Impress, Toga, 80s, and many more!Football BlockFootball Block is a great way to be social. KDs pair up with a fraternity and everyone buys football tickets together. It's a great time to hang out and cheer on our team. Go Bucks!Formal The Emerald Ball is a magical night for KDs to spend with their dates and each other. It is held during winter quarter, usually around Valentine's Day. Sisters wear formal gowns and their dates wear tuxedos or suits. Everyone always has a blast eating dinner and dancing the night away.Date PartiesKDs enjoy two date parties each year. One is held in the fall-a semi-formal affair, and one is held in the spring-a more casual party. Sisters bring dates and everyone enjoys a fun evening together!Grab-A-DatesEvery so often, KDs will throw a surprise party. Girls are told about the casual event only a few hours in advance and then"grab a date" as quickly as possible. It's a guaranteed good time!© 2011 OSU Kappa Delta

Philanthropy

Philanthropy
Kappa Delta has four national philanthropies to which all chapters serve. We enjoy working with our national philanthropies as well as helping our local community.Kappa Delta's support of the Children's Hospital of Richmond, Virginia dates back to 1921, when Kappa Delta donated $1200 to buy two hospital beds. Since then, Kappa Delta has given more than $2.2 million to the Children's Hospital to help develop a motion clinic, purchase hospital equipment, medical braces and neurosurgical instruments, provide playground equipment, and purchase vans to transport patients. The Orthopaedic Research Awards developed from Kappa Delta's partnership with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) as well as the Children's Hospital. Like the hospital, Kappa Deltas wanted to make a difference in prevention as well as treatment in crippling children's diseases. Kappa Delta presents three $20,000 awards annually to orthopaedic researchers who have made key discoveries in bone grafting, osteoporosis, treatment of polio, scoliosis, and knee replacement, and other breakthrough procedures and research. You can learn more about the AAOS by clicking here. In 1981, one of our own Kappa Delta sisters, Donna Stone, founded an organization called Prevent Child Abuse America. Every year, thousands of Kappa Deltas host "Shamrock Events" to raise money for national and local child abuse prevention efforts. Here at Ohio State, our chapter holds two events: an annual silent auction & benefit dinner and the Slapshot Hockey Tournament, which both raise money and awareness for Prevent Child Abuse America. Most recently, Kappa Delta partnered with the Girl Scouts of the USA to reinforce values of honesty, integrity, friendship, and leadership to Girl Scout troops across the country. Kappa Delta sponsors events through the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty and the Girl Scout Uniquely Me! program to promote self-esteem in Girl Scouts. Beyond our national philanthropies, our local chapter also participates in Ohio State's Community Commitment, Rock the Block, serves the Ronald McDonald House of Columbus, spotlights and serves one service organizatoin in the city each month, and supports other Greek philanthropic events.

FELLOWSHIP, FRIENDSHIP, and LOVE.Every Kappa Delta sister shares the irreplaceable bonds of sisterhood. Kappa Delta means sharing a bond with friends who care. A Kappa Delta stands beside her sisters through good times and bad. Kappa Deltas are truly lucky, as few women are fortunate even to experience this kind of friendship. The bonds of sisterhood signify more than just unconditional friendship; they represent unconditional love. In 1999, Kappa Delta created National Women's Friendship Day. In recent years, the day was converted to a month - September. Our female friends hold a special place in our hearts and lives, and this is a chance to celebrate the unique gift of friendship. In early 2006, Kappa Delta joined the groundbreaking Dove Campaign for Real Beauty to help raise self-esteem in girls and women. The campaign is a global effort intended to serve as a starting point for societal change and act as a catalyst for widening the definition and discussion of beauty. Girls and women of all ages benefit from the campaign as we explore what it is to be beautiful with our friends, coworkers, mothers, and daughters. The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty has included controversial advertisements of real women with real curves in their underwear, a Super Bowl ad promoting self-esteem among girls, activity booklets, a comprehensive website and more. "A chilly rain splattered against the windowpanes of the little dormitory room on Professional Hall, the dormitory floor where most of the seniors lived. Saturday meant no classes, and the dreary weather that hung over Farmville was a perfect excuse for the four friends to tuck themselves away in that cozy spot and talk for hours... It was that afternoon that Kappa Delta was born - October 23, 1897 - at the State Female Normal School in Farmville, Virginia." -Ordinary Miracles: 100 Years of Kappa Delta SororityThe thought that over 100 years ago four young women could just sit down and create a sisterhood as enduring as Kappa Delta sometimes defies understanding. But that's exactly what they did.Kappa Delta's founders were four very different women. They ranged in age from 15 to 23, yet brought a singular sense of purpose to this particular endeavor. Their dream was to create something more lasting than a club -- a sorority! It was to be an entity that would grow beyond their own chapter at State Female Normal School. But they never dreamed that it would grown into an organization of nearly 200,000 women, over 200 chartered chapters and nearly 500 chartered alumnae associations nationwide.The sorority still holds true to its original object adopted sometime before 1902... "The object of Kappa Delta Sorority is the formation and perpetuation of good fellowship, friendship and sisterly love among its members; the encouragement of literature and education; the promotion of social interest; and the furtherance of charitable and benevolent purposes."Kappa Delta's early leaders were women of vision. Today's women live that dream and keep the vision alive! Kappa Delta's Four FoundersLenora Ashmore Blackiston was unconventional. She was a dreamer and an idealist filled with enthusiasm for new ideas. Nicknamed "Nora," she was a writer and a poet, able to put her thoughts into action. She was the one who first suggested the idea of forming a sorority, but was unable to put her lasting personal marks on Kappa Delta's beginnings because, after Christmas holiday, she transferred to Randolph-Macon Women's College.Quiet and extremely intelligent, Julia Gardiner Tyler Wilson came from a distinguished and respected family; her grandfather was John Tyler, former U.S. president, and her father was the president of the College of William and Mary. She was characterized as capable, dependable and possessing considerable artistic talent. She illustrated most of the school's first yearbook and designed the Kappa Delta badge. After helping to found the sorority, Julia spent another year at State Female Normal before transferring to Dana Hall, a preparatory school for Wellesley College where she earned her AB degree in 1904. She joined her founding sister Sara at Kappa Delta's 50th anniversary celebration at the 1947 convention.Daughter of a Virginia senator, Sara Turner White was gracious and friendly, but known as being a bit more straight-laced than most students. She enjoyed her friends and social activities more than she did her studies. Sara did not return to college after that first year, but remained steadfastly involved with Kappa Delta throughout her long life.Mary Sommerville Sparks Hendrick was much loved and respected by all students at State Female Normal School. She was known for her fine character and gentle understanding. Mary had concern for others, perhaps because, at 25, she was more mature than the younger students. She was a Bible class leader. Mary stayed on and helped the fledging sorority through its early years
